Bedside Cabinet Bachelorhood!

For me, these bedside cabinets were a sign of bachelorhood.

I’ve owned these for a good chunk of my life, moving with me from rented property to rented property when I was younger.

I got married, and they went.

I got divorced and… they returned.

Yesterday, I moved in with my partner and… the cabinets have gone again! I actually found it quite emotional, but I cry at the drop of a hat!

I’ve definitely put too much emphasis on these though. You see, as a middle-aged man, I was embarrassed to own them again. It felt immature… I felt like a failure.

But why? They’re just vessels to hold stuff, surely?

We put too much significance on material things. These cabinets held my wallet, pens and some old Journals too. On top, rested my mobile phone, lamp and reading glasses.

If you’re a man who has had to leave the family home and find somewhere to live alone, or even in a house share… it’s ok. It’s a stage. It can feel like a backwards step, but it’s a transition. You’re not alone, although it may feel lonely. I know, as I’ve been there.

Be proud to own those cabinets chaps!
